Authorities say a bus carrying worshippers headed to an Easter weekend church gathering plunged off a bridge on a mountain pass and burst into flames in South Africa, killing at least 45 people. The only survivor of Thursday's crash was an 8-year-old child, who was receiving medical attention. The Limpopo provincial government said the bus veered off the bridge and plunged into a ravine before busting into flames. The victims appeared to be from Botswana. They had been on their way to the town of Moria for a popular Easter pilgrimage that attracts hundreds of thousands of worshippers who follow the Zion Christian Church. This year's pilgrimage is the first since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A video showing a Lebanese nun asking young students to pray for the “men of the resistance,” a reference to Hezbollah fighters, has sparked controversy in Lebanon. The Lebanese Shiite militant group has been clashing with Israel across a volatile border for nearly six months, becoming a critical regional player in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The war of words that unfolded over the nun's controversial speech highlighted larger schisms in Lebanon over Hezbollah, now amplified by the militant group’s role in the Lebanon-Israel border clashes and by fears that an already crisis-hit Lebanon could be dragged into an all-out war.

Asian shares are mostly higher in quiet, Good Friday holiday trading. Markets were closed in Hong Kong, Sydney, Singapore and India, which is celebrating Holi. On Thursday, Wall Street coasted to its latest winning month and quarter by rising to more records. The S&P 500 rose 0.1%, adding to its all-time high set the day before. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1%. Treasury yields inched higher in the bond market following several reports on the economy. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.20%. U.S. bond and stock markets will be closed for Good Friday.
The largest crane on the Eastern Seaboard is arriving by barge so crews can begin removing the wreckage from the deadly Baltimore bridge collapse. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says the crane can lift up to 1,000 tons. It will be used to clear the channel in order to resume the search for four workers who remain missing and reopen the key shipping route. Another crane is also on the way. Moore says “the best minds in the world” are working on plans to remove the twisted metal and concrete remains of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. It was struck early Tuesday by a cargo ship and quickly fell into the river.
A mob in the Mexican tourist city of Taxco has brutally beat a woman to death because she was suspected of kidnapping and killing a young girl, rampaging just hours before the city's Holy Week procession. Even though police had detained the woman as a kidnapping suspect, the mob pulled her from a patrol vehicle and kicked and beat her Thursday. Taxco once drew throngs of tourists to its silver workshops, but in recent years drug gang violence has taken its toll on tourism, and accustomed local inhabitants to violence and a mistrust of police.
